This makhila walking stick has a bovine horn pommel top with a decoratively engraved brass collar and brass loop for a wrist strap.
'The makila is the walking stick of the Basques, used either as a travelling companion or as a symbol of authority and respect.
It is a cane made entirely by hand, with a manufacturing process that can last between 5-10 years, which has remained intact for centuries.
The Basque Country is the name given to the home of the Basque people. The Basque country is located in the western Pyrenees, straddling the border between France and Spain on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. Euskal Herria is the oldest documented Basque name for the area they inhabit, dating from the 16th century.'
Below the pommel, the shaft is plaited leather which becomes cladded leather down to the lower plaited leather collar.
