'The Leeds University Officer Training Corps (OTC) was established in 1909 as part of a national initiative to address the shortage of trained officers. During World War I, it was a significant source of commissioned officers for the war effort, with an estimated 1,600 officers commissioned from the university's contingent. The OTC played a crucial role in producing officers, and many of its members were killed or wounded during the conflict. Today, it continues as part of the Yorkshire Officers' Training Regiment. '

'J R Gaunt & Son was established in Birmingham in 1884 by James Richard Gaunt and son Charles Frederick Gaunt (both previously employed by Firmin & Sons), & specialised in manufacturing military and uniform buttons. In 1899 they were incorporated as a limited company, opening London offices in 1905.
After the first world war they bought up an number of button and insignia makers, including Jennens & Co Ltd of London in 1925. The company became part of the Firmin group in 1991.'
