The shaft is made from flexible shark vertabrae with a few wooden washers. 


'Sharks have no bones, and instead, their skeleton is made from cartilage to make them lighter. Their vertebrae, in particular, are made from calcified cartilage, which is a more sturdy form of cartilage.'
