'As early as 1786, one Samuel Sangster is mentioned as a cane merchant of Fleet Street. Whether he already occupied number 94 is not certain, but that particular address is mentioned as being in the family at least since 1802. Samuel’s cane shop developed into an umbrella and cane shop when his two sons, William and John, took over the shop. William Sangster wrote a celebrated book titled 'Umbrellas and Their History', which is still in print today.'

‘It was in 1848 that Samuel Fox, a wire drawer by trade, started to make solid steel ribs in Stocksbridge, near Sheffield.
Fox was a master wire drawer and it was this skill in the production of fine quality wire that he turned to the production of umbrella ribs.
Samuel Fox continued improving and developing his ribs over the next few years when his son William Henry Fox joined the company around 1913.’The shaft ends in a cane section with an original metal ferrule.
