This antique umbrella has a curled treen handle ending in an ornate repousse silver crown which winds round the handle to form a loop. It is hallmarked for:
'London 1904
There is a maker's mark:
'BJ'
For the London stick & umbrella maker:
'Benjamin Jacobs'
Trading as:
'M Jacobs & Co'
The umbrella is furnished with a repousse silver collar hallmarked for:
'London 1908'
With an identical maker's mark to the crown.
The collar has a cartouche engraved with the original owner's name:
'E. Reeton'
Below the collar is a black cord wrist strap with a decorative ball tassel.
Partridgewood shaft & metal frame that holds a black silk canopy embroidered with gold lines. There are spoke ends made of a yellow material.
One of the spokes is stamped with the frame maker's name:
'Paragon'
‘It was in 1848 that Samuel Fox, a wire drawer by trade, started to make solid steel ribs in Stocksbridge, near Sheffield.
Fox was a master wire drawer and it was this skill in the production of fine quality wire that he turned to the production of umbrella ribs.
Samuel Fox continued improving and developing his ribs over the next few years when his son William Henry Fox joined the company around 1913 and, around this time, adopted the trademark 'Paragon'.’
The shaft ends in a cane section with an original metal ferrule.
A beautiful top-quality umbrella, suitable for a collector.
