This walking stick is made from a single piece of ebony, and features a hand-carved nutcracker handle in the shape of an old man's head wearing a nightcap. There is a hinged handle that moves the man's lower jaw to enable it to be used to crack nuts.
The handle is furnished with a decoratively engraved silver collar hallmarked for:
'Chester 1892'
And features a makers mark:
'W.N'
For the Coventry-based walking silversmith:
'William Neal'
The collar is engraved with the initials of the original owner:
'JM'
