This treen Sunday stick is furnished with a brass collar below the handle, engraved with the country of origin:
'Made in Hittadu'
'Hittadu is an alternative spelling for Hithadhoo, the capital island of the Addu Atoll in the Maldives.
The name is also famously associated with a unique type of souvenir walking stick that was made in Hithadhoo during the 1950s and 1960s. These souvenirs, often bearing the inscription "Made in Hittadu", were made at the nearby British Royal Air Force (RAF) Gan station, which operated from 1957 to 1976.'
The stick has a strong shaft and an original brass ferrule.
'Sunday sticks were manufactured because of the ban on golfing on the Sabbath, Sunday. They fashioned the canes with a golf club head as a handle and they became known as 'Sunday Clubs' or 'Sabbath sticks'. It is said that on the Sabbath a Sunday Club owner, when nobody was looking, could still enjoy a crafty putt or swing.
A rare item perfect for use or a collector.
